Max Defers in cPanel

Introduction

Max Defers is a cPanel feature that allows the user to set a limit on the number of deferred email messages that can be stored in the mail queue. When a message is deferred, it means the mail server is temporarily unable to deliver it to the recipient's mail server. By default, cPanel allows an unlimited number of deferred messages, which can sometimes cause performance issues. In this article, we will learn how to configure and manage the Max Defers feature in cPanel.

Configuration

To set the Max Defers limit in cPanel, follow the below steps:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Navigate to Email → Email Deliverability from the cPanel dashboard.
  3. Click the Manage button next to your domain.
  4. Under the Advanced Settings, set the Maximum percentage of failed or deferred messages a domain may send per hour (0-100) option to your desired value.

Note: The default value for this option is 100%.

Managing Defers

To manage deferred messages in cPanel, follow the below steps:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Navigate to Email → Track Delivery from the cPanel dashboard.
  3. Select the Deferred tab to view the list of deferred messages.
  4. Click the message subject to see more details about the message, including the reason for deferred status.
  5. From this page, you can manage the deferred message as per your requirements.

Note: cPanel automatically retries deferred messages every 15 minutes by default. If you want to change the frequency of retries or other related settings, you need to alter your e-mail exim configuration.

Conclusion

With the Max Defers feature in cPanel, you can limit the number of deferred messages on your server, thereby improving server performance. By following the above steps, you can easily configure and manage your deferred messages in cPanel with ease.
